Episode 72: Finding the Right College at the Right Price with Vielka Hoy, CEO and Founder of Bridge to College

Vielka Hoy is a twenty-year public, private and collegiate career educator turned college consultant. She has guided thousands of students in identifying “best fit” collegiate institutions to match their strengths and needs. After perfecting her formula, Hoy wanted to make her process available to students and educational institutions across the country.

From 1999 to 2017, Vielka held teaching positions at UCLA and Berkeley, as well as department chairs and dean roles at public and private high schools throughout California. Hoy has a Master of Arts in Afro-American Studies from UCLA and received her BS in Education from NYU. A self-proclaimed doer, in addition to her CEO duties, Hoy is a single mom and forever a student herself, currently pursuing a Social Science Masters Degree at the University of Chicago.

Association with Colleges Based on Ranking

Most people nowadays assume a college is top-notch based on their ranking. People pay so much attention to the overall image but not the details of the university. They want to go to prestigious schools so they can have a better reputation and people will respect them. People attach their intellect and abilities to the names of things. The students assume that they are just smart and have the potential to get into an Ivy League school. It is not true but this ideology is coming out of nowhere because employers also do the same thing. You can learn the same thing no matter what school you go to but when it comes to jobs, the employer will pick the applicant that went to the higher ranking school.

Looking at Trends

Trends have become so basic in college. For example, student-athletes are usually the ones with the worst grades and test scores but they leave at higher rates. They graduate at higher rates than the rest of the student population. The reason for that is because they get the most support. If that was the same for the other types of students and departments then there will be an interesting change in the system.

Juggling Professional and Personal Lifestyles

This all starts with moral authority. It is all about being responsible. For example, this one woman on the team would clock out at 6 pm so she can have a legitimate dinner with her family. That is not a bad thing because she found the balance in her life which is key. By giving people time to be human beings and social beings, they bring their whole selves when it comes to their job and duties. You can be very casual when working as well. As long as you are keeping up with your deadlines and finishing your work. It is important to make a schedule of your time so you can become a decent human being.
